Cookies

Alesis sets only the cookies it needs to work: to keep you signed in, to keep forms secure, and to remember choices you make, including the one below. Inside the product — every page behind sign-in — that is the whole list. There is no advertising there and no third-party tracking of any kind.

On these public pages we also count visits with Google Analytics, which does set cookies. They are never used for advertising, and you can turn them off whenever you like: the notice on the page does it, and so does the section below. Rejecting deletes the ones already set.

We count page views so we can tell which pages earn their place. Most of that is done by Simple Analytics, which sets no cookie, keeps no IP address and builds no profile: there is nothing that identifies you, and nothing that can follow you to another site.

For each page view it records the address of the page, the site you arrived from, your browser and screen size, your country, your language, how long you stayed and how far you scrolled. It does not record the page title, and it drops everything after a question mark in the address, so the name of a matter, a document or a conversation never reaches it. Those figures are held in the Netherlands.

This runs on the public pages and inside the product. Because it sets no cookie and identifies nobody, there is nothing here to consent to.

Google Analytics tells us more: which pages people read together, what they arrived looking for, where a route through the site breaks down. That needs cookies to tell one browser from another. It starts when you arrive and keeps going unless you reject it — on the notice, or in the section below — at which point it stops for this browser and the cookies it has set are deleted.

It runs on the public pages only. It is not present on any page behind sign-in, so it never sees a matter, a document, a conversation or anything a firm has put into Alesis. That is a property of where the tag is loaded, not a setting we have chosen.

Where it does run, it records the address and title of the page, the site you arrived from, your browser and screen size, roughly where you are, and how long you stayed. Google works that location out from your IP address and does not store the address itself. Google holds these figures for us and works on them at our instruction; we have turned its advertising features and its data sharing off, so none of it builds an advertising profile, follows you around other sites, or tells Google anything for its own purposes. The figures are processed in the United States, under the transfer terms UK law requires.

Why we tell you rather than ask you. UK law allows analytics like this without asking first, so long as it only measures how a site is used and is used only to improve it, the figures go to nobody else for any other purpose, we explain it plainly, and you can object at any time free of charge. That is the exception we rely on, and the section below is the objection. Anything that measured who you are rather than how the pages are used would fall outside it, and we would have to ask.
